It's been brought to my attention several times over the past year, that if I want to grow my business I need to have a social media presence.
"People want to know who you are and what you're about". "People want to see you and see your work". I get all that. Heck, I like to "get to know" the people & businesses I'm interested in too! I find it entertaining and enjoyable to consume relevant content just as much as the next person.
I have a (very) small social media footprint, but I do post things when I have the time or the inspiration. Perhaps I don't keep in constant contact with my clients and my "audience" as I "should" but there's a reason!
*Let me preface MY stance before I go any further; I have NOTHING against the social media "hustle". I find it brave, actually, when people feel comfortable to put themselves out there the way that they do and incredibly impressive how people are able to master the art of their visual representations.*
The thing is: it's just NOT ME.
The thought of recording myself and being on display doesn't appeal to me. It's intimidating and overwhelming, frankly. I've gone back and forth trying to justify pulling myself out of my comfort zone in order to have a "presence". I've even allowed myself to feel guilty and like a failure for not putting in more effort in doing so. BUT! I've come to the conclusion that not only would it be a chore that I hated doing, but it would also come off as being incredibly disingenuous (<-- I hate that word, btw, but it fits) because I would know I'd be faking it the whole time. What is the point of trying to make other people feel comfortable if it makes me uncomfortable? The whole production would be a waste of time anyway because BS content doesn't resonate with anyone!
After much thought, and agreeing that it's important to connect with not only my clients, but my peers and potential clients as well, I've decided to lean on my strengths for that connection, rather than my weaknesses.
Writing has always been a passion and an outlet for me. I feel comfortable expressing myself through written word -not through speech- although, those close enough to me know that I do PLENTY of talking!!
The thought of "putting myself out there" still gives me a bit of anxiety, especially knowing how cruel and judgemental we ALL can be, but I feel like it might be worth a little discomfort if it means that I can make meaningful connections and lend knowledge and support to those who might be interested.
So, who am I? What am I about? Why should anyone listen to me? What sets me apart from all the other people and businesses in my industry?
Well, to be honest, at 39, I'm still trying to define who I am. I could share tons of things ABOUT myself, but summing up who I am is complicated. I've had a LOT of life experience though; sometimes it feels like too much, but I do feel like it's given me the ability to relate to a lot of different people in a lot of different ways, so in that regard, I feel as though I have much to offer.
I'm a mother, granddaughter, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, friend, girlfriend, ex-wife, writer, esthetician, interior designer, business owner. Lots of different hats and lots of different ways to wear them!
When it comes to business, I'm still learning. When it comes to my profession, I'll always be learning. I take very seriously the responsibility I have to my clients to not only educate them, but to continually educate myself. Ingredient & product knowledge and skin conditions and how to treat them are of utmost importance to me.
I believe, or at least I'd like to believe, that many, if not most, of the individuals and businesses in my industry, have the same passion for quality care for their clients/patients, as well as access to the most up to date information and cutting edge treatments & technology for their practices as I do for my own.
So, what sets me apart? Everything else! There's only one me! There's no other Stephanie and no other S.L. Skin Studio out there! Sure, I ride the hot mess express from time to time like everyone else, BUT, when you walk into my studio, whether you're on that train or I am, you will be treated with kindness, compassion, respect, love and gratitude.
When you walk into my studio, you're putting your trust in my hands and I don't take that lightly! Whether you're coming to me for your monthly minute of relaxation (mother's especially, you get this!), whether you're looking for solutions to your most challenging skin issues or need help putting together the perfect at-home skincare routine, rest assured that I will do everything in my power to meet your needs and help you reach your goals. I'll even throw in a little humor with silly/embarrassing stories of my early days in the industry learning to master my Brazilian waxing techniques! I've got some good ones!!
At S.L. Skin Studio, you're going to be treated like a friend, in a warm and relaxing environment. You will be valued, not only because it's important to me, but because you deserve it! 🤍
